How to Cut a Watermelon Like a Local

I don’t know how I survived decades without knowing how to efficiently cut a watermelon! I made fruit salads at a bed-and-breakfast four mornings a week for an entire summer and cutting the watermelon was always one of the longest parts of that task. Why did I have to move to Central America and learn from the locals to find out the super-easy way to do it? Just in case there are a few others out there who are/were as clueless about this sort of thing as I was, here are some photos to explain, to save you the trip. (Although we’d love to have you visit!)

That’s it! As it turns out, “peeling” the watermelon (or cantaloupe or similar type of fruit) first makes it a ton easier to cube. After making the criss-cross cuts, I then cut that whole big chunk in “half” (parallel with the countertop) to make the cubes smaller, but you can do whatever works for your family/bowl/mouth :).
